In 2017 I got to thinking about Eastern and Western Dragons. At first, I wondered why the two types of dragons we're vastly different and then researched any possible similarities, which would allow me to connect the history of these mythical beasts. I then discovered that within Chinese folklore the Dragon King, Ao Guang, was believed to be a fire breather and was the only Chinese Dragon King who could do so. Upon researching why this was the case, I could find no reason given within Chinese folklore! This gave me the idea that I could connect Eastern and Western Dragons through fire breathing and create my own story behind how Ao Guang became a fire breather. I was amazed to find that Ao Guang’s existence coincided with some extremely important facts, which made it easy for me to create a story of how Ao Guang gained his fire breathing skills and of how Eastern and Western Dragons may have met. I cannot declare that my poetic tale is perfect, but all the ideas are real possibilities as dates and times in history match. It may well be that he is The Dragon King who initiated the wearing of Dragon King Embroidery for Chinese Emperors and that a certain incredible Chinese invention allowed him to become a fire breather! Then based on this he could then easily have been the teacher of this essential Dragon skill to his Western cousins, for within Chinese folklore his fate is unknown! He features in Journey to the West and within that famous story, the monk Tang Sanzang is the initial character ordered to travel West to India. His journey by foot started from Xi’an and a statue honouring him stands in front of The Wild Goose Pagoda there so, naturally that was the perfect location to film a reading of this poem. I hope you enjoy it.
